An Artistic Spin on Life Science
Harlem: Living, Breathing, Growing
about the art
The installation, titled "Harlem: Living, Breathing, Growing", is a stunning piece that captures the essence of life science in the community and the impact that it has on the area.
As a whole, the piece is one large plant cell, but upon closer inspection, it highlights notable science buildings in West Harlem: The Mink Building, the Sweets Laboratories Building, the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, Columbia University Northwest Corner Building, Lowe Library, and CUNY Advanced Science Research Center. If one looks closely, silver paint elegantly spells out the word “Harlem" -- positioned rightly at the center of the piece, proudly at the epicenter of our future activities.
This piece not only brings a vibrant energy to our space but also reflects the spirit of innovation and collaboration that drives everything we do here at Harlem Biospace.
About the Artist
An artist originally from Louisiana but currently based in NYC, Melissa Mae Kors is known for her brightly colored, patterned paintings, often filled with hidden symbols and imagery. While her artwork may look light and whimsical, they are usually driven by more serious themes such as isolation, oppression, and fear.
Her work was recently published in Global Art Times Magazine (2023) and also exhibited at a New York Fashion Show with the Six Summit Gallery in NYC (2024). We are honored to have her contribute to our collection of creative and inspiring pieces.
